It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Prof. dr. ir. Jacob (Jaap) de Smit on 1 June 2026, at the age of 83. Jaap was the namesake and the founding spirit of In de Smitse. As a professor at the Rotterdam School of Management, Jaap played a vital role in creating a place where students could connect beyond the classroom. What started as a mobile bar in a lecture hall grew into a beloved institution and a second home for generations of students and staff at Erasmus University.
We are deeply grateful for his vision, dedication and lastig legacy. Jaap will always remain an important pat of the Smitse story. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
